We welcomed our newest intern, Nancy, to our Knoxville office earlier this summer. Let’s get to know her and welcome her to the team!
1. Where do you go to school and what is your major?
I am currently attending the University of Tennessee here in Knoxville. In December I will be earning my Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering and hopefully going on to earn a Master’s in Structural Engineering.
2. Where did you grow up?
I was born in Egypt, but my family moved to the U.S. when I was 6. I lived in Nashville until I moved to Knoxville for college.
3. If you could live anywhere, where would it be?
That’s hard to say since I have not traveled much, but if I had to pick a place in The States, it would be Florida or California, for sure. I am not a fan of cold weather so the yearlong warmth would make me very happy. If I had to pick a place abroad, I would choose Spain. I’ve always been intrigued by their culture, food, fashion, and music. It’s so lively and intentional, I love it.
4. What is your favorite book? (Code books don’t count)
Currently, my favorite book is “No Wonder They Call Him the Savior” by Max Lucado. I’ve read it twice because it is just that good! Lucado examines the viewpoints of Jesus’ friends, family, and even enemies during the crucifixion and resurrection to come to the conclusion which is the title itself. I’ve read this book when I was at a low point needing a reminder that He is my Hope, and I’ve read this book in good times to remind myself that all good is only made possible through Him and for Him.
5. What is your favorite game or sport to watch/play?
Unfortunately, I was not gifted with an athletic body so I do not play a lot of sports, but I do love to watch them. My favorite to watch is the NBA! My all-time favorite board game to play is The Resistance or Avalon. If you’ve played this game, you know what I’m talking about.
6. If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
I could eat Salmon Avocado Sushi Rolls for the rest of my life and be perfectly content.
7. If you could go back in time, what year would you go to and why?
I would go back to 9th grade and pick Band instead of Spanish for my elective. I mean, I took Spanish for 5 years and the only thing I can tell you is “Hola, me llamo Nancy”. I have always wanted to play an instrument, but by 9th grade I kept telling myself that it was too late to join because everyone had already gone through the classes in middle school and they all knew how to read music notes. The truth was, I could have joined in 9th, 10th, or even after, but fear of failure held me back. If I could go back, I would choose the saxophone or violin and play my little heart out.
8. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In 5 years I see myself earning my PE or SE license and practicing as a Structural Engineer. I would love to be impacting my community in the same way that my co-workers impact their community every day. They are setting an great example of who I want to be. Like them, I see myself becoming a valuable asset to the company I work with. In addition, I want to raise a family and become a great mom for my children.
9. Who is your hero?
My hero is my mom. I can go on for hours about how amazing my mother is. She is the strongest, most hardworking, compassionate, forgiving woman I know. She is my best friend and my life advisor.
10. If you were stranded on a desert island, what 3 material possessions would you want with you?
I would want an inflatable raft, a spear, and a satellite phone in case something happens to my raft.
11. What three words best describe you?
I think the three words that best describe me would be reserved or quiet, organized, and compassionate.
