ORNL Shipping and Receiving Building

Monday, February 8, 2016

CSA is proud to have been a part of the new shipping and receiving building at Oak Ridge National Laboratories.  The New building replaces building 7018 which was 58 years old and was demolished due to: poor energy performance, asbestos contamination, and inefficient functionality. Building 7120 is pending LEED Gold certification. The building was constructed utilizing a custom pre-engineered metal building for the distributing area and a custom conventional structure for the office building areas.  This concept was utilized to allow HVAC equipment to be placed behind high parapet walls on top of the conventional structure to service both the distributing areas and the office space.

The project recently won a USGBC – TN Green Light Award  at the 2015 Green Light Awards Gala._DDP5552 _DDP5561 _DDP5564 _DDP5571 _DDP5423

Award of Excellence presented for Bass Pro Shops

Tuesday, March 10, 2015

CSA was awarded Memphis’ top engineering award last night for the Bass Pro project.

Bass Pro began renovations and construction to the Memphis Pyramid in October 2012 and will open May 1, 2015. The 535,000 square foot building will include an Uncle Buck’s Fishbowl and Grill with a bowling alley and a saltwater aquarium. A 28-story glass elevator, the tallest freestanding elevator in America, will take visitors to the top of the Pyramid where they can view Memphis and the Mississippi River on an indoor and outdoor observation deck. Also located at the apex of the Pyramid is Sky High Catfish Cabin, a restaurant, bar, and 10,000 gallon aquarium. At the base of the Pyramid will be a 100-room hotel known as the Big Cypress Lodge. Bass Pro at the Pyramid will contain 600,000 gallons of water features and the largest collection of waterfowl and hunting related equipment in the world.

The new megastore will include the Big Cypress Lodge grand hotel; 600,000 gallons of water features; a cypress swamp with 100-foot-tall trees; an interactive National Waterfowling Heritage Center in partnership with Ducks Unlimited; and a glass-floored cantilevering observation deck at the top of the 32-story steel pyramid.

The major challenge for the elevator tower structure was to limit the amount of drift that the tower would generate during a seismic event. The drift had to closely match that of the Pyramid. The tower was also designed to support mechanical equipment for both the Sky High Catfish Cabin and the HVAC system for the upper third of the Pyramid. Another challenge was to utilize light gage steel for the Big Cypress Lodge structure while also cladding the units to appear as log cabins.

Congratulations to Jeff Higgins and everyone on the team that had a hand in making this an award winning project.

CSA Knoxville had the privilege to work with Barber McMurry Architects on the new Hicks Orthodontics Dental Facility building . Not only did the building win the AIA East Tennessee’s People Choice award but the design was a finalist for the Arch Daily Building of the year. The project consists of steel and wood construction with unique roof with multiple interior pitches and interior roof drains.  The project also required some unique structural framing with steel and concrete to achive the large cantilevers and exposed structural steel look.

AIA Knoxville Awards

Friday, December 13, 2013

The CSA Knoxville office attended the 2013 AIA of East Tennessee Awards at the Southern Depot in early October. The evening was filled with excellent designs competing for people’s choice, a wonderful speaker who presented the awards and by celebrating a great year with many of our clients. Our own Bobby Haines, was recognized for his work and support of the AIA of East Tennessee as an Allied Board Member. The treat of the night was the bluegrass band who’s tunes  carried us into the evening!
